[NEWS ANALYSIS] Tunceli enjoys new calm and longs for real peace [ Today's Zaman ]
Tunceli -- During my tour of the predominantly Alevi and Kurdish city of Tunceli in eastern Anatolia, I was able to establish new friendships. The people I spoke to here say Tunceli, seen as a fortress of the political left, has been leery of right-wing parties and Sunni Muslims since the Alevi-Sunni clashes of the late ‘70s. However, the ice is now melting as new evidence points to the ‘deep state,’ or shadowy networks and groups nested within the state hierarchy, such as the Ergenekon gang, being behind the Çorum and Maraş incidents -- in which Sunni mobs killed hundreds of Alevis.
